A two-step method is proposed in the paper to solve the dynamic economic dispatch (DED) with valve-point effect (VPE). In the first step, the rectified sinusoidal term which represents the effect of VPE is piecewise linearized and the entire problem can be solved by mixed integer linear programming (MILP). In the second step, based on the solution of the first step, the DED problem is decoupled into static economic dispatch (SED) problem. With the introduction of quasi singular point, a modified dimensional steepest decline method (MDSD) is proposed to explore and exploit a better solution. More accurate solution can be found within a shorter run time. The proposed two-step method is compared with other similar methods through a ten-unit test system.
