We present an overview of the U.S. Army Research Laboratory's efforts in developing low profile and wideband antennas for tactical communications. Specifically we utilize an anisotropic magneto-dielectric substrate. This work includes the development of a flared dipole from 200 to 500 MHz, as well as a circularly polarized crossed dipole for satellite communications from 240 to 320 MHz. Each of these antennas are cavity backed with a profile of less than a fortieth of a wavelength. Finally, we give an overview of the theory of anisotropic transverse resonance to be utilized in next generation cavity backed antennas.
