A camera was used to obtain the images of weld pool surface during high power laser welding. Characteristics of weld pool surface were analyzed by image segmentation and feature extraction. Aiming at exploring the relationship between the parameters of characteristics and weld width, the mean statistical and correlation analysis theory were applied to get the parameters of characteristics and the width of weld beam. Experimental results show that trend of parameters area(PA), x coordinate of centroids(CA), perimeter(PP), width(PK), height(PG) of high-brightness of weld pool are consistent with the weld width, and the parameters area(PA), perimeter(PP), width (PK), height(PG) have a strong correlation with the weld width. It offers a reference for the modeling and assessment between characteristic parameters and welding quality.
