Sol-gel phospho-silicate-methacrylate hybrid coatings for corrosion protection of carbon steel

Phospho-silicate-methacrylate hybrid coatings were prepared from 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (MEMO) and Bis [2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl]phosphate (BMEP) via sol-gel process with different molar ratios of precursors.Theobtained coatings on carbon steel were found to be transparent, free from cracks andhave anapproximate thicknessof 27 to 30 μm. The thermal stability of the preparedhybrids was investigated using Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis (TGA). The formation ofSi-O-Si, P-O-P and Si-O-P linkages were determined using magic angle spinningsolid-state ~29Si, ~31P nuclear magnetic resonance technique (MAS NMR). Electrochemicaltechniques were used in order to evaluate the corrosion properties of theprepared coatings.
