Many in the design community have long been aware of the durability and maintenance-free nature of hot-dip galvanized steel, but until recently have not translated its longevity into low initial cost, lowest life-cycle cost, and nonexistent energy consumption and zero emissions during use. These characteristics and galvanized steel's performance exposed in various atmospheric conditions and in more complex soil, concrete, and water submersion applications will be examined. The presentation will interpret the unique corrosion kinetics associated with various soil conditions, highlighting the effects of chlorides, moisture, and pH. The newly developed graph helps estimate the service life of galvanized steel in soil based on the relationship of these variable, and it will be the centerpiece of understanding when and where the use of galvanized steel in soil is appropriate. In addition to the performance of hot-dip galvanized steel in various exposure conditions, this discussion will provide the structural community the design, steel selection, and inspection specifics to produce the highest quality galvanized coatings. Case studies will also be integrated to demonstrate particular performance, appearance, and life-cycle cost efficiencies from real world examples.
