Vertical irregularity of R.C. building may pose high challenge on its behavior and may increase its seismic vulnerability. In general, the seismic behavior of vertical irregular R.C. building is rather complicated. Only one source of vertical irregularity is investigated in the present research; that is variation of first floor height of model building. This type of vertical irregularity is commonly utilized in the building environment in many countries. The seismic performance of vertical irregular R.C. building is assessed for different ground motion characteristics. Nine different natural earthquakes have been employed in the analysis. The intensities and frequency contents, of the various ground motions, may have prevailing effects on the seismic behavior of R.C. buildings. The seismic performance assessment is conducted through examining damage indices and drift ratios of model buildings. Nonlinear dynamic analyses are performed on a 2-dimensional model of a 12-story R.C. building. The study reveals that the seismic performance, of the investigated models of irregular buildings, appears to be equally satisfactory, or even superior than that of regular ones.
