Due to the recent economic downfall, the construction Industry has become a very competitive market. Overhead and profits are lower than ever. Thousands of construction companies are filing bankruptcy and closing their doors. As tough times fall upon the construction industry, construction companies have to become more innovative. Companies need to discover new ways to streamline their business. The larger firms have more resources to overcome this deficit, but the smaller companies are at a disadvantage. They have to find simple and inexpensive ways to become a more efficient business. This paper examines the implementation of cost-effective mobile application strategies in tougher economic times and analyzes how it is effectively being used by small and medium-sized companies in the construction industry. Two case studies will describe the benefits and limitations of these strategies and their impact on project performance. Mobile strategies implemented in these companies will be examined in relations with work process changes and cultural issues in order to analyze the direct and indirect benefits of the selected strategies. The author conducted interviews, on-site data collection, and document analysis. Simple and cost-effective strategies along with efficient management procedures and asset management tools allow small and medium-sized companies to realize an increase in office and jobsite efficiency, effectively saving time and cutting costs in order to compete in challenging times.
