The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at Langley Research Center (NASA LaRC) teamed together to conduct a workshop to begin to address some of the challenges of the growing complexity of large-scale complex engineered systems (LSCES) such as those found in aerospace, nuclear, large maritime architectures, and major civil infrastructure systems such as transportation systems. The workshop was held February 7-8, 2012, in Arlington, Virginia and included over 100 participants who were invited from a wide variety of disciplines, including several branches of engineering and the social sciences. The participants also represented numerous universities, government agencies, and industry. The heterogeneous mixture of participants (who typically would not be in the same professional engagement) was an intentional effort to address other goals of the workshop: drawing wisdom, theories, and potential solutions from non-traditional solution spaces and to connect diverse researchers and practitioners to facilitate the future development of new research communities related to the design of large-scale complex engineered systems. The workshop focused on increasing awareness of lesser-known aspects of the problem space of designing large-scale complex engineered systems such as the sciences and mathematics of design, organization, decision-making, and complexity. This report summarizes major topic areas, presentations, and discussions of the workshop, as well as outcomes.
