The relationship between alloy content and part cross section is an important consideration for heat treated PM parts. While increasing alloy content results in higher hardenability at a given cross section, minimizing the alloying elements in a PM material can represent a significant cost savings, as long as the desired mechanical properties are met. This study looks at optimization of hardenability and mechanical properties in lean Fe-Mo-Ni-C heat treated parts, while minimizing alloy additions for a range of sample sizes.
