SAFETY EMERGENCY SPILLWAY DESIGN TO CATER FOR OVERPUMPING AT THE INGULA PUMPED STORAGE SCHEME

The 1332 MW Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme is currently under construction and is scheduled for completion in 2013. The Ingula scheme is located about 23 km north-east of Van Reenen, within the Drakensberg Mountain range of South Africa. The scheme consists primarily of a concrete faced rockfill upper dam, roller compacted concrete lower dam, 26 m wide machine hall and a transformer hall. The machine hall houses four reversible pump-turbines and motor-generators that generate at a rated head of 441 m.
