Outdoor Lighting Networks for Connected Public Lighting

Outdoor lighting is going through a tremendous transformation with the emergence of Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology, which provides higher energy efficiency and extended lifetime. Meanwhile, connected public lighting is integrating the lighting infrastructure with the "Internet of Things" (IoT). As a consequence, users will have more options in controlling their lighting infrastructure, such as adaptive lighting controls, precise fixture status monitoring and enhanced asset management. Connected public lighting takes advantage of ICT technologies to transform the operation and management of the city and improve the accessibility and efficiency of the public infrastructure. Several roadblocks are still standing on the way of mass deployment of connected public lighting systems, namely the upfront investment to digitalize the existing lighting infrastructure, and lack of open and future proof standards and interoperable systems. In this paper, we look into the current connected public lighting system technologies and capabilities, and evaluate existing and new standards enabling system interoperability including TALQ, which defines a new application layer standard for connected public lighting systems.
