The prime achievement of the Nuclear Power Demonstrator (NPD) is that it was a vital first step which led to the commercial highly successful CANDU type nuclear-electric generating units in Canada and overseas. The commercial CANDU units were highly successful because they achieved high performance in regard to the five basic objectives: 1.low cost of electricity produced; 2.high reliability of electricity produced; 3.excellent safety of generating station workers; 4.excellent safety of the general public; and 5.excellent low environmental and biosphere impaet(zero greenhouse gas emissions).
