This paper presents a framework for monitoring and visualizing the emissions from the construction equipments. Construction and its related activities are responsible for a great share of total annual air pollutants and Green House Gas (GHG) emissions resulting from fossil fuel combustion engines. Our goal is to develop a framework that allows further study of such emissions on-site and in real-time. Through implementation of our monitoring system, accurate emission information that is otherwise only available based on rough estimations is made available to construction managers and decision makers in real-time. The framework further defines quantitative and qualitative metrics for controlling these measured emissions. Current method of controlling construction emission relies on estimated values for equipment emissions that have been measured in laboratories and under controlled conditions. In practice, however, the real emission values are significantly different due to on-site conditions and equipment maintenance history. Our vision is that existing on-board equipment sensors combined with location tracking systems and visualization techniques can be used as a potential and currently untapped source of information to support and improve construction emission reduction programs. We further study the possibilities and challenges related to the creation of such a network and highlight different perspectives in analyzing the collected data.
