An Ontology of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Sources in Buildings

Today, in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector there is a major goal to achieve sustainable buildings that are both Energy Efficient (EE) and employ Renewable Energy Sources (RES). Latest advancements in Semantic Web technology may prove instrumental in facilitating more efficient and effective knowledge exchange in this area. The goal of the present study is to contribute to these ongoing efforts by analyzing the possibilities to capture, distill and disseminate know-how among the expert AEC communities in an open way. For this purpose, a complex conceptual model i.e. ontology based on Semantic Web standards was developed. It is shown that architects, designers, civil engineers and other professionals can use the developed ontology to study various engineering problems related to EE and RES in buildings. Moreover, the ontology could be used to create and develop an open knowledge base of engineering solutions related to energy in buildings.
