Numerical Modeling of Subarial Landslide

Subarial landslides such as soil/structure failures, snow avalanches, lava flows, or rock falls into water bodies can produce a massive wave or run-up. The present study aims to develop a mesh-free particle method based on the Moving Particle Semi-Implicit (MPS) method (Koshiazuka and Oka, 1996) to model such phenomena. In this study, the model was applied to a rigid box sliding down into standing water. The fluid motion of the numerical results is reasonably simulated when compare to the experimental results. This study shows the capabilities of the developed model in dealing with a subarial solid landslide, and it can be developed for a complex multiphase granular landslide.
