摘要

Trenchless methods will be used in various challenging ground conditions to install new laterals on a large scale interceptor relief sewer project in Cleveland, Ohio; furthermore, existing laterals that remain in service along the new interceptor relief sewer route will have to be connected to the new sewer at many of the cross streets along a 3,500 linear feet portion of the alignment, which presents challenges since microtunneling methods will be used to install the new sewer; and this pipe will generally not be exposed except in the jacking and receiving shafts where there is an average spacing of shafts of roughly 800 feet. For this project, there are approximately 3,000 linear feet of new laterals that have to be installed, which range in pipe size from roughly 24-inch to 48-inch diameter. It is anticipated that either small diameter microtunneling methods or pilot tube techniques will be used to install the majority of these new laterals as part of a larger 7,800 linear feet installation of 66-inch pipe with roughly 6,900 linear feet installed using pressurized face microtunneling methods. At the project site, the overburden consists of fill, alluvium, glacial lacustrine deposits, and glacial till; the bedrock is Chagrin shale. This paper presents a brief overview of the project and the regional facilities plans for the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District; it also discusses details about the small diameter trenchless applications that are anticipated for installation of the new laterals; furthermore, it provides concepts regarding the connections to be performed between the existing laterals and the new microtunnel installation of the interceptor relief sewer. This project is currently in the final design stage and is scheduled to begin construction near the end of 2012.
