The proactive inspection of manholes has been a long-overlooked part of most maintenancestrategies employed by collection system asset managers. This has been due primarily to the lack of effective andefficient technologies available to execute such a program. This paper will cover issues related to the need toinspect manholes as part of a more comprehensive approach to proactive maintenance and will highlight some of theopportunities for cost-savings and sewer overflow reduction that manhole inspections can provide.Relatedly, this paper surveys all currently known methods and technologies for manhole inspection and will discussemerging technologies and the enhanced decision-making and analysis tools provided by such technologies. Ideasand examples for workflows for field data collection and office analysis, decision-making, archiving and dataintegration are also covered.This paper’s purpose is to educate those involved in asset management and collection system maintenance in orderto spur a more informed discussion of how manhole inspection relates to certain goals, such as: reduction ofinfiltration and inflow, capacity assessments, prioritizing operation and maintenance work, and preventing seweroverflows.
