The role of funding source for commercializing university patents: Network analysis on technology — Industry linkage patterns

Although the formulation of technology policies focusing on university is a topic that has been well-discussed in academia, more analytic researches have not yet been developed. Especially, the characteristics and source of R&D funding take critical roles for academic researches to be commercialized. This study aims to investigate the differences depending on R&D funding sources — private or governmental — and to formulate the research policy based on empirical results. From a qualitative perspective, we visualize two-mode networks by linking patent and industry codes. From a quantitative perspective, we conduct ANOVA using centrality indices calculated from the network graphs. Overall, we found idiosyncratic patterns in the technology (patent) — industry networks. However, we only observed marginal differences between the two groups. Furthermore, results of the ANOVA showed a difference in closeness centrality between the two groups. We suggest the policy directions which emphasize interdisciplinary researches and strengthen technology's accessibility to industry.
