In the past few years, dozens of coal-fired units have begun to operate furnace calcium bromide addition systems to achieve mercury air emissions limits set by local regulations and/or to qualify for Section 45 federal tax credit for refined coal. EPRI is conducting surveys of over fifty of these units to document the mercury removal performance of these bromide addition systems and to catalogue observed balance of plant effects. This paper reports on the findings of the survey, including bromide addition's observed effects on mercury oxidation and removal, emissions of other trace metals, fly ash re-use, duct and FGD corrosion, water effluent emissions, and opacity.
