TDA Research, Inc (TDA) is developing a low cost, high capacity CO_2 adsorbent for post-combustion CO_2 capture from existing pulverized coal-fired power plants under funding from DOE (Contract # DE-FE0007580). This is an advanced physical adsorbent that binds CO_2 more strongly than common physical adsorbents, however, because CO_2 does not form a true covalent bond with the surface sites, the regeneration can be carried out with only a very small energy (4.9 kcal/mol CO_2) input. In this DOE funded project, TDA is working with Babcock & Wilcox (B&W), MeadWestvaco Corporation (MWV), the University of California, Irvine (UCI), the Gas Technology Institute (GTI) and Illinois Clean Coal Institute (ICCI) to advance the technology by improving the material capabilities and the process design, and by carrying out an evaluation with a fully-equipped prototype unit using coal-derived flue gas to demonstrate the technical viability of the concept. The results from sorbent and process development efforts are presented here.
