Many utilities in the country utilize wet-limestone or sometimes wet-lime scrubbing for flue gas sulfur dioxide (SO_2) removal. Monitoring of scrubber chemistry is very important to determine such variables as reagent utilization and forced-air oxidation efficiency. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) offers an excellent method for quickly analyzing scrubber slurry solids and byproduct chemistry. The author will present data from his work with this technique during the 18 years he spent at two coal-fired power plants. The paper also illustrates that TGA provides a quick method for evaluating limestone quality, with some exceptions.
