Wet FGD Process Advances using CAATech: Compact Absorber Arrangement

The vertical placement of wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) equipment within the concrete chimney eliminates process equipment complexity while preserving the overall process flows. The compact arrangement benefits new and retrofit installations of any supplier's WFGD system. This innovative design, "CAATech," places the absorber vessel above the WFGD process equipment. CAATech's compact absorber arrangement has a much smaller footprint and has much lower capital costs than the traditional configuration using an absorber building. The much shorter chimney flue, located directly above the absorber, eliminates the horizontal absorber outlet duct. The vertical arrangement and process simplifications significantly reduce quantities and costs of pipe, wire and other commodities. Although compact, CAAtech preserves operations and maintenance accessibility and simplifies operations via fewer pumps and a compact, mostly vertical piping system. This paper will show that the innovative compact arrangement is a viable solution to the high capital costs of WFGD.
