The MSWI fly ash used in this study was mainly composed of calcium compounds and chlorides, and some heavy metals, i.e. Zn, Pb and Ba, were also present. The TCLP test results showed that this fly ash had a high leaching concentration of Pb and thus should be classified as a hazardous waste. By converting the MSWI fly ash to a geopolymer material, the heavy metal leaching can be significantly improved. The results of the microstructure analyses demonstrate the occurrence of geopolymerization reactions and the differences in chemical structures between the MSWI fly ash and the geopolymer.
