A management strategy to control carbon dioxide emissions using algae to produce valuable products has been presented. Algae are used to capture carbon via photosynthesis in controlled environments. Once stored in biomass, carbon contained within the algae in the form of lipids, cellular mass carbohydrates can be further processed into utilizable products such as animal feed or biofuels. Some can be used as food sources that may be consumed by animals and later humans or as supplementary biofuels. Essentially, carbon capture using algae allows a large percentage of carbon to ultimately be stored in animal or human biomass over the life time of the organism similar in a manner to capturing atmospheric carbon through forestry.
