Acknowledging world's high priority to improve the conversion and the efficiency of renewable energy systems, this paper proposes a simplified and highly reliable azimuth tracking system for photovoltaic (PV) platforms, which lead to the harvest of over 97% from the available solar radiation, ensuring thus with 28% more direct solar radiation income for the PV conversion, as compared to the fixed tilt systems. The proposed solution performs the two-axis solar tracking by using only one motor; this system consist of a 7R (R= rotation) quadrilateral spatial linkage which generates the elevation motion (the rotation around the horizontal axis) from the azimuth motion (the rotation around the vertical axis). Moreover, the system is adaptable to harvest the up-stated percentage on any latitude, according to the specific atmospheric conditions, thanks to an optimum dimensioning algorithm which also ensures the safe working conditions (avoiding the blocking positions) and the annual optimum step-wise tracking program. The paper offers an insight on how the numerical simulation results are meeting the infield data gathered from the 7R azimuth system implemented on "Transilvania" University Campus, confirming thus the viability of the proposed solution.
