The paper describes the integration of medium temperature solar heat (100°C-220°C) into industrial processes. Seven case studies of existing projects in different execution stages are evaluated. All projects are equipped with parabolic trough collectors from the same supplier. The case studies include examples with indirect steam generation, direct steam generation, hot water, superheated water and thermal oil. Hydraulic integration is in parallel and in series with boilers, with and without thermal buffer storage. Collectors are either roof- or ground mounted. Scope and interfaces for hydraulic, mechanical and control equipment are described. The case studies are assessed and compared with regard to (1) control and operation, (2) impact on the industrial process, (3) performance and (4) specific cost, specifically the split between main cost items (collectors / mounting / hydraulics / instrumentation / control). Learnings and best practices are presented. Four of the seven projects will be accompanied and evaluated by a solar research and testing institute. Longer term operating experience will be reported in a follow up paper.
