A SIMPLE MODEL FOR PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF DISTRICT SOLAR HEATING PLANTS IN SPAIN

Central Solar Heating Plants combined with Seasonal Storage (CSHPSS) have been developed in North Europe countries as Germany, Denmark and Sweden while in some areas of Spain and other Mediterranean countries with higher radiation as well as significant heating demand have not been studied deeply. The use of solar thermal energy for Sanitary Hot Water (SHW) and Heating in the residential sector with a solar fraction around 50% will increase about 5 Mtep the energy supply with renewable energy, which is a significant part of the 8 Mtep required by Spain to achieve the European Union (EU) renewable energy target: 20% by 2020. A simple model has been developed to evaluate the solar collector area and the hot water tank volume required to obtain a given solar fraction using only monthly data of solar radiation and heating demand. The model has been applied to evaluate CSHPSS systems for different Spanish cities in different climatic zones and various heat loads. Results obtained shown that solar collector area, water tank volume and specific solar heat cost mainly depend on the solar fraction, heat load and location. The obtained results have been compared and validated with those provided by a more detailed TRNSYS model.
