The traditional role of architecture has been to physically exploit natural processes; as we move to an energy uncertain future advanced technology has sought to biomimetically interpret them in an effort to advance our existence. Within the discipline of contemporary solar architecture, a generic solution has been to build continuous rows of shade-free development at the suburbs. The question still remains, how should solar access within compact urban brownfield sites be planned? With the world's urban population set to rise dramatically from 49.2% to 60.8% by 2030 the answer must be found within cities. With reference to ancient, modern and contemporary innovative research , a solar community is presented that is capable of sustaining an inevitable urban population within site limited Northern European locations. Heliotropic movement methodologies allow biological expediency to inform and respond to urban contexts born out of non-solar forces. This work strengthens the architectural knowledge of urban & celestial geometries, the design solutions described at city, building and facade scale demonstrate how architecture can find a new way of viewing and valuing nature by using it as a model, measure and mentor to mitigate the causes of Climate Change.
