Sheet Control in the Press Section

Sheet control is critical to successful machine operation. When poor sheet control occurs, the cost in equipment damage, clothing damage and runnability is extreme. Managing sheet control means setting equipment up properly and executing on the basic SOP's and recipes for stock prep, forming, trim cuts, press rolls (vacuum, venting, doctoring, etc.) and press felt conditioning consistently. Certain chronic issues need to be prioritized and approached as DMAIC or Kepner Tregoe process. If sheet control equipment is lacking or press geometry can be improved, it should be strongly considered. In other areas, the approach should be to open up the operating window by avoiding excessive process variability. Press fabric design should be optimized for sheet control, press solids, sheet smoothness and consistent performance for the targeted nip cycles. Conditioning needs to include showering, uhle box and chemical cleaning to stay centered in the operating window.
