Residual stress prediction for hot strip composite roll by measuring the stress of the disk cut out from the roll

In order to prevent fracture, compressive residual stress is provided on the surface of the hot strip composite roll. However, since the stress should be balanced at the cross section, a large tensile residual stress must appear at the roll center. Residual stresses play a significant role, and it is necessary to measure the residual stress distribution from the surface to center correctly to avoid fracture. The disk-cutting method has been widely used in to measure the residual stress on the roll from the cut-out disk stress. However, nobody knows how the residual stress is changed from the initial residual stress of the roll. In this study, therefore the difference of residual stress between the roll and disk has been investigated by applying the thermo-elastic-plastic FEM analysis. Finally we find a relationship between the heat treatment and the residual stress in composite rolls.
