A coherent representation of the natural environment is an important part of a distributed simulation environment for mission training and concept development and experimentation. The NATO task group Missionland was tasked to develop a dataset of a static environment from which databases can be constructed for wide scope of simulators. The task group created a design of the virtual continent Missionland and set a location in the North Atlantic Ocean for this new continent. The Missionland continent covers multiple climate zones, various elevation settings, coastal areas and large continuous land masses, ract. The task group defined an approach to develop the Missionland dataset in a efficient way by developing dedicated tools and data generation methods, using existing (commercial) tools and data contributions from the participating countries. The Missionland dataset contains elevation data, vector data, 3D models, textures, material coding, imagery and maps. In support of the dataset, a deployment and continuation process to ensure proper use and continuation after the life of MSG-071 task group has been set up. This includes guidelines and support in using Missionland.
