Inspite of its robustness and reliability, the operation of three-phase induction motor (3ϕ IM) on 1ϕ AC supply is often hindered due to energy storage requirements in the DC link of conventional 1ϕ-3ϕ AC-DC-AC power converters. In order to overcome this challenge, speed sensorless control of a 3ϕ IM from a 1ϕ AC source is presented, by means of a 1ϕ to 3ϕ matrix converter (MC), that entirely eliminates the DC link. The idea is advocated for applications in low speed motor drives, so that advantages of 1ϕ-3ϕ matrix converter (MC) topology are effectively utilized, while bypassing its limitations. For smooth control over torque and speed, the stator current quality is enhanced by means of delta sigma modulation. Speed sensorless control is exercised through a full order predictive observer that certifies high precision state estimation at low motor speeds.
