The use of solar-battery hybrid systems reduce uncertainty associated with solar panel output and enables the overall power-output characteristics to be near-dispatchable. A critical component for hybrid power configurations are the energy management systems (EMS) used for coordinating flow of energy amongst the different ports. In this work, the integrated dual dc-input boost converter (IDDBC) topology has been evaluated as EMS for a standalone dc-based distribution system which is powered by solar panel, and assisted by a battery. In the above-mentioned application, the requirements for the EMS is mapped to the different converter operating modes, and in order to transition between the different modes, control strategy within the EMS has been evaluated. Using a design example, the operation and control for IDDBC topology have been presented for solar-storage integrated system, and its performance evaluated using simulation.
