In this paper, damping of active power oscillation in the large hydropower plant (HPP) with Power System Stabilizer (PSS) is investigated. The excitation control scheme is designed with static excitation system model (ST5B), over excitation limiter (OEL), under excitation limiter (UEL) and PSS. During transient disturbances, excitation system and PSS both act together to maintain stability at synchronous machine terminals by maintaining system voltage within the defined limits. The excitation controller gain values are designed using bode plot for the desired frequency range and its effectiveness is validated through MATLAB/Simulink environment for a 250 MW synchronous generator serving in Tehri hydropower plant. Simulation results demonstrate the damping of active power oscillation by the part load operation with and without PSS.
