Just-In-Time Packaging vs. CDN Storage

Operators delivering video-on-demand(VoD) to multiple devices using HTTPstreaming must select between two options:store assets in multiple formats to bedelivered via a content delivery network(CDN), or utilize an on-the-fly, or just-in-time(JIT), packaging to convert VoD assets intothe required client format when it’s requested.This paper discusses the benefits of JITpackaging and then proposes a model toevaluate the costs associated with eachapproach, discussing the parametersassociated with various use cases. We alsodiscuss the implications of the cost model formore general edge processing, such as just intime transcoding.
