VERSATILE HIGH STRENGTH FIRE RESISTANT PASTE ADHESIVE FOR AIRCRAFT INTERIORS

The current FAA regulations regarding the fire protection of aircraft interiors are undergoinga significant change. There is a stronger emphasis on the use of fire resistant/flame retardant(FR) adhesives for aircraft interiors. The scope of this development program was to producean adhesive with (1) equivalent or improved structural and handling properties whencompared to current market offerings, (2) fire resistance in all FAA and OEM testconfigurations. The traditional approach of filling an adhesive with solid or liquid flameretardants has not produced adequate structural and handling results. A new FR adhesivewas developed that takes advantage of dual purpose materials in order to achieve optimalstructural and handling performance as compared to current non-FR structural pasteadhesives. A variety of cure profiles were investigated from ambient to elevatedtemperature to show performance in a wide variety of processes. This high strengthstructural fire resistant adhesive was designed as a base adhesive to design a portfolio of fireresistant adhesives. This portfolio covers a wide range of work lives and colors, whilemaintaining excellent structural and handling requirements. This two-part paste adhesivemeets the most stringent of aerospace interior application needs, including fire resistance,structural performance and handling properties.
