Risks and factors influencing raw material availability andconsequences for the development of future automotive power trains

This paper aims to explore key risks and extraneous factors influencing raw materialavailability and related consequences for the realization of future automotive power trains.Important raw materials for the electro mobility are presented followed by an evaluation oftheir future supply risk. A review of the current situation and a summary of expectations forfuture technological developments are presented. The current situation of political factors,access to resources and other important factors are then discussed, highlighting some ofthe major risks and their influence on up-take rates of alternative power train technologies.Specifically the specific relationships between demand and supply side for specific rareearth elements and their effects on price development is investigated and suggests howthese factors might influence existing relationships within the automotive industry. Thepaper concludes with suggestions for alternative strategies for specific groups within theautomotive value chain to mitigate those risks.
