In order to meet continually increasing vehicle safety and fuel economy requirements, automakers have responded by incorporating advanced high strength steels (AHSS) into vehicle designs. A recent addition to the AHSS family is produced with "quenching and partitioning" or "Q&P," a special heat treatment process. This promotes carbon enrichment of retained austenite, thereby enhancing ductility without substantially compromising strength. In this article, the quasi-static, room-temperature tensile deformation of a Q&P steel is investigated and compared to available grades of AHSS using stereo digital image correlation (DIC) for strain measurement.
