An Energy-Aware Data Gathering Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks Using Data Correlations

In wireless sensor networks, the sensing data are usually correlated and thus have redundancy, which make it a waste of energy in transmission. In this chapter, we propose an energy-aware data gathering protocol using correlations in data. First, the correlated zones are constructed based on the correlation difference between the sensing data. Then, the data inside each correlated zone are aggregated and the data transmission rate is adjusted to save energy. Finally, a data gathering tree is built based on the nodes' residual energy and the distance in between. Simulation results show that our protocol outperforms the existing data gathering methods LPT and PEDAP in reducing energy consumption and prolonging the network lifetime.
