Playout buffering is an effective method to combat the delay jitter problems in VoIP systems by making a tradeoff between delay and loss. To adjust the playout buffer dynamically and achieve better speech quality, an adaptive playout buffer algorithm based on speech quality prediction is proposed. This algorithm models the delay with a Weibull distribution and formulates an online loss model of the playout buffer. It predicts the instantaneous speech quality under burst packet loss condition based on the E-Model method. Then it can adaptively find the optimal setting for the playout buffer by maximizing the predicted value of the perceived speech quality. The simulation results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm outperforms existing algorithms and improves the speech quality of VoIP systems effectively.
