摘要

Bicycling is receiving increased attention as an urban transportation mode due to its potential positive impacts upon traffic congestion, emissions, fuel costs and public health. As bicycle travelers grow in numbers, urban areas have designated bike routes along many streets, some of which include delineated bike lanes, pavement markings and signs. The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices specifies the details of control devices available for on-street bicycle facilities but includes a process by which new device concepts can be examined and ultimately added to the Manual. Using that process, a Shared Lane Marking has been examined at four sites in Austin, Texas. Extensive video surveillance of bicycle riders and automobiles before and after device implementation has been collected and comparative statistical analyses have been developed to determine whether the marking produces differences in bicycle rider or automobile driver behavior. The analyses permit quantitative assessment of behavioral changes, as well as qualitative statements regarding likely impacts upon bike rider safety.
