In the past, seaports often formed the bustling commercial center of seaboard cities. Most of today's modern container ports are far removed from the center of the cities in which they are located. This is because they generate noise, air and light pollution. There are lots of trucks and trains getting in the way of general purpose traffic. The perception of many onlookers is that container terminals are not pleasant to look at, as indicated in a recent draft environmental document on visual quality for a project near one the Port of Seattle's container terminals: "Terminal 46 container terminal(s) constitute a visually uninteresting use."
