A novel approach to improve retention basin water quality performance is retrofit with a floating vegetated island (FVI) to introduce wetland-like vegetation. Limited studies have identified the capability for pollutant removal by an FVI but none have dealt with treatment efficiency at a full scale or specifically for stormwater. The first aim of the research project is to assess the overall efficiency of a retention pond with an FVI compared to an unvegetated one. The second aim is to identify and quantify the different removal pathways induced by the FVI and to focus on the design factors that have an impact on these pathways.
