Lubrication and Delubrication of Alumix 431 Grade Powder

The function of lubricants used in aluminium powder metallurgy is related not only to the friction reduction during compaction and ejection but also to the cold welding prevention. There are some limitations to the use the lubricants commonly used in iron powder metallurgy, which is connected with the de-lubrication process occurring during heating before sintering. Thus, in aluminium based parts production the choice of the lubrication method, lubricant type and its amount require special attention. This study describes the performance of lubricants including Acrawax, Kenolube and zinc stearate blended with Alumix 431 grade powder and glycerol used for die wall lubrication. The properties of the powder mixtures such as flowability and apparent density, their pressing performance in terms of compressibility, ejection behaviour and green strength and delubrication behaviour have been investigated. The admixed Acrawax produces the best set of properties expected from the lubricant.
