The Lowell Regional Wastewater Utility (LRWWU) is implementing its vision to be a leader in environmental management system approaches and energy conservation to promote sustainable wastewater collection, treatment, and management. Proactive in its quest to minimize energy use, LRWWU has reduced its energy consumption by 35 percent through active engagement of staff and energy-saving procedures. These efforts include motion detectors for lighting, power correction capacitors, conversion of direct drive motors to variable frequency drives and more energy-efficient motors, and conversion of its mechanical aeration system to a fine-bubble system.However, the utility has not rested on this achievement. LRWWU continues to audit its energy use and identify capital improvements to reduce energy consumption. Currently, LRWWU is installing high-efficiency turbo aeration blowers, roof-top photovoltaic systems to provide supplemental electricity, green roofs to reduce the stormwater runoff from the buildings and to reduce solar gain, a solar wall for supplemental building heat, and complete renovations to the Administration Building for energy-efficient lighting and climate control equipment. This work will continue LRWWU's role as a leader in energy conservation in the community.
