Renewal of old and crumbling underground pipelines in the U.S. presents a vast opportunity to utilize new techniques and methodologies such as Trenchless Technology. TT is a fairly new approach to underground pipeline renewal and the concept is generally divided to two main categories - "Installation" and "Renewal". Cured- In- Place Pipe (CIPP) and Pipe Bursting (PB) are among the most widely recognized renewal methods and although there have been numerous papers and considerable researches in both methods, there is a need to evaluate these two methods in a comparison format with traditional open-cut technique to determine the advantages and disadvantages of each method from the perspective of differing parameters. This paper will evaluate the CIPP AWWA Class IV, PB, and open-cut methods based on cost, diameter size ability, and service re-connection to answer the simple question; which one to use for water main distribution renewal?
