In recent years, pipeline transportation technology has been rapidly developing in China. A large number of new gas (coal gas) pipelines, sewage and running water pipelines must pass beneath existing roads, railways or buildings. Due to the local conditions or restrictions for construction, open cut digging often cannot be used, and only trenchless methods may be employed. In order to further reduce the effect of the construction on existing railways or roads, recently developed grid jacking technology may be employed, which minimizes the impact on existing structures. This paper systematically describes the design principle, the applicable scope and the construction procedure of the grid jacking construction technology. This paper also discusses the potential impact to existing lines and facilities.
