Testing of Multi-Gas Detectors for Responding to Toxic Contaminant Releases

Seven commercially available handheld detectors were tested in the laboratory for their quantitative and qualitative performance in determining environmental and toxic gas hazards, consisting of percent O_2, LEL, and six common TICs. The focus of the testing was on use of these detectors by first responders to rapidly assess the hazards of an emergency situation. Testing included evaluation of quantitative performance factors, as well as operational factors that may be important in an emergency situation. The results of this testing will allow informed purchase decisions to be made by users of these technologies.
