Today's photochemical grid models use gridded meteorological data often provided by mesoscale numerical weather prediction. In recent years, there has been development and verification of two-way coupled air quality modeling systems such that the weather model and air quality model are run essentially concurrently with a single executable. Feedback is possible between the two model environments, allowing for improved temporal resolution and potential for better flow representation and feedback of radiative impacts from the air quality model into the weather model. This study explored this technology by benchmarking the two-way coupled air quality model system over the eastern US and coastline with the goal of development of a daily operational air quality modeling system in future phases of this work.
