Addition of the Oil and Gas Extraction Sector to Toxic Release Inventory Reporting Requirements: Short and Long-Term Challenges

It is unknown whether EPA will expand TRI reporting requirements to the oil and gas extraction sector in 2013 in response to a petition from environmental groups. If it is added to the TRI program, industry should prepare for new administrative requirements in the short term and potentially long-term regulatory impacts. At a minimum, TRI would require industry to gather more information on chemicals, wastes and emissions and make it publicly available. Thus, industry should prepare for the corresponding public attention and regulation that may accompany TRI expansion.
